Announcement: NSYSU Campus-wide distance learning extended until June 25, 2021(A letter for Faculty Members)

Dear faculty members,

Hope everyone continues to remain well and healthy!

Due to the severity of the epidemic, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) have announced on May 25 a nationwide extension of Level 3 Alert and school suspension through June 14, 2021. Considering the increase of confirmed cases may lead to a continuation of nationwide Level 3 Alert till the end of June, the NSYSU COVID-19 Prevention Team has adopted the second phase of the campus-wide distance learning plan from June 15 to June 25 to prevent risks of infection from unnecessary mobility. Your full support is crucial in providing a well-rounded arrangement for students' learning. The following are extended measures for distance learning:

  1. Instructors to confirm the assessment method of final exams in the course syllabus system:

At the beginning of the semester, the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) requested faculty to indicate how finals would be carried out when a distance learning plan is adopted. You are now requested to log into the Course Syllabus System to re-confirm before June 3, so students can get the latest information.

(2) Cyber University online system: https://cu.nsysu.edu.tw/mooc/download.php.

  1. Submission of student course grades:
  1. During the adjustment period (May 17 to May 18), students were not accountable for grade deduction when summiting an absence notice to avoid unnecessary travel to reduce the risk of contraction.
  2. Postpone the period of submission until July 16.
  3. Grade assessment for swimming courses:

A. Graduating students: course grade assessment will be based on class performance before the adoption of distance-learning mode.

B. Non-graduating students: those who have passed the exam will be assessed accordingly, and those who have not will be assessed in the exam to be held next academic year.

  1. Practical Courses:

(1) If courses are conducted in distance-learning mode, faculty are suggested to adopt grading evaluation methods such as video recording or reports.

(2) When in-person learning mode is necessary, grade assessment can be extended until the first week of the next semester. For graduating students, the assessment shall be conducted with consideration of student rights. Please submit a grade assessment extension application to the Office of Academic Affairs prior to June 3 for approval. The application link will be provided later.

  1. Summer courses:

Minimum student number limitation will be lifted. If instructors are interested in offering summer courses, please plan the course syllabus with the distance learning method as an option. Further notice will be announced in mid-June based on the development of the epidemic.

  1. Teaching assessment survey:

The survey will be conducted online instead of in classrooms.

  1. Resources for distance learning:

(1) Synchronous mode: access through Cyber University or interactive software like Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Adobe Connect, Cisco WebEx, U-Meeting and Jitsi Meet.

(2) Asynchronous mode: make a screencast through EverCam or PowerPoint you’re your computer or videotape instructing procession and upload to Cyber University or other online platforms.

(3) Access through Microsoft Teams or Google Meet:

A. Through Microsoft Teams: faculty and staff can apply for an O365 account, and students can activate access, refer to the webpage for details. Download Teams software for connection stability.

B. Through Google Meet: access through Google or Gsuite account. Make sure to adjust your browser setting for access to the video function.

(4) Details for the above software are available on the Library Services Cyber University website.

  1. Ensure Effective Learning:

Please watch for student attendance, save digital course materials, keep records of online interactions, quizzes, and reports for future reference to ensure effective learning.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity.” Under team efforts, NSYSU has succeeded in ensuring a smooth operation of all teaching activities for the past one and a half years. Now, we will keep working together to face a tougher challenge. We welcome inquiries on distance learning from all faculty. Wish all safety and health.
